Dix, Dorothea Lynde, 1802-87. American social reformer; b. Hampden, ME.  A pioneer in the movement for specialized treatment of the mentally ill, she influenced the founding of a number of public psychiatric hospitals in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. The Dix Building at Spring Grove Hospital Center is named for her.
